Rep. Jim Wayne Lecture: Against the Grain: The Social Worker in a Broken World In-Person

The Spalding University Library and School of Social Work invite you to an evening with former Kentucky House Representative Jim Wayne to celebrate the donation of his papers to the Spalding University Archives.

Rep. Wayne will share a lecture entitled, “Against the Grain: The Social Worker in a Broken World.” Drawing on the reform traditions in social work, Rep. Wayne will use several examples of effective social policy change during his years in the Kentucky legislature to offer a perspective for applying lessons learned to the serious challenges facing society today and into the future.

About the speaker: Rep. Jim Wayne served for 28 years as a representative for Kentucky's 35th House District in Louisville, during which time he became a leading voice on social justice issues, including tax reform and justice, affordable housing, and advocacy for rights and protections of vulnerable communities. In addition to his extensive legislative experience, former Rep. Wayne is a practicing mental health professional with a MSW degree from Smith College School for Social Work in Northampton, Massachusetts, as well as a MA in theology from Maryknoll School of Theology in New York. Finally, he earned his MFA in fiction from Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky in 2012. His 2016 novel, The Unfinished Man, explores responses to abuse within the Catholic church, which was also central to Wayne’s legislative policy work, and received two international honors from the Catholic Press Association and was a finalist in the Indie Book Awards. Recently, he donated his papers to the Spalding University Archives.

**We'll also have signed copies of his book, The Unfinished Man, as raffle prizes for in-person attendees!**
